Researchers at the Medical University of Groningen (Netherlands) have determined how common sexual problems are in people with mental illness. The results of the study, magazine Journal of Sexual Medicine (JSM).
Sexual dysfunction is believed to be common in patients with psychiatric disorders. Factors such as substance use or physical illness may contribute to sexual problems, but the extent of this effect is not fully understood.
The authors conducted a meta-analysis of 24 studies involving more than 1,000 patients. The volunteers suffered from depressive, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and schizophrenia.
The reported prevalence of sexual dysfunction in psychiatric disorders ranges from 45% to 93% in depressive disorder, 33% to 75% in anxiety disorder, 25% to 81% in OCD, and 25% in schizophrenia.
The most affected phase of the sexual response cycle was sexual desire in both men and women in patients with depression, PTSD, and schizophrenia. Patients with OCD and anxiety disorders reported the most frequent dysfunction in the orgasmic phase, ranging from 24% to 44% and 7% to 48%, respectively.
