Scientists at Harvard Medical School (HMS) have developed technology that assesses the risk of blood clots by analyzing the gas a person inhales. Research published in the journal advanced materials.

The formation of microscopic blood clots during immunothrombosis or inflammation is common in severe COVID-19 patients, as well as in sepsis (blood poisoning). Thrombin is an important component in this process.

In a new study, scientists developed a new technology to diagnose immunothrombosis by measuring the level of thrombin in exhaled air.

They used branched polymer nanoprobes containing specific thrombin binding sites. The method has been successfully tested on animals.

To date, there is no method for the early detection of immunothrombosis in a living organism. These results form the basis for real-time measurement of thrombin, which can save many lives and make treatment more convenient for the individual.

“Early detection of immunothrombosis and subsequent intervention can prevent organ failure in patients with sepsis or severe COVID-19,” the scientists wrote.
