Scientists from the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) have discovered that long-term symptoms of COVID can appear several months after the acute phase of the disease. Research published Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR).

Post-COVID syndrome, also known as long-term COVID, includes a range of symptoms that develop soon after infection or about a month later. Fatigue, runny nose, headache, sore throat, shortness of breath, chest pain, diarrhea, forgetfulness, and difficulty thinking or concentrating are associated with reduced quality of life.

The study included 1,741 participants, two-thirds of whom were women. Their condition was evaluated every three months. About 16% of those who recover from COVID have had symptoms for at least a year. Also, the symptoms of the disease may disappear after an acute period and reappear after a few months. The maximum duration of post-COVID syndrome in the study was approximately one year.

The new study differs from the previous study in more frequent monitoring and monitoring of symptoms: in other studies, it was evaluated at one or two time points.
