Any pet can suffer from the activities of dog poachers. Even if they just try to poison stray animals that way. Often, dog hunters use the anti-tuberculosis drug isoniazid or rat poison to poison them. Dog hunters also fill dog treats with nails and broken glass. About this socialbites.ca said Elena Kaurkina, veterinarian and head of the resuscitation and intensive care unit at Vetcity Clinic.

“Patients who have been poisoned or injured by the activities of dog poachers do not come often – at most once a month. But the fact that this happens in principle should warn all owners, ”said the expert.

According to him, one of the most dangerous poisons for dogs is the drug used for the treatment of tuberculosis isoniazid. It disables parts of the pet’s brain and paralyzes breathing. In this case, the symptoms appear already in the first hour of poisoning. It can be recognized by the following signs: animals lose coordination of movements, become lethargic and stop eating, heavy breathing. In addition, salivation increases, diarrhea, foaming at the mouth, convulsions and vomiting are observed.

“As first aid for isoniazid poisoning, you can inject pyridoxine – vitamin B6 intramuscularly into your pet’s thigh. Dosage – 50 mg (1 ml) per 1 kg of animal weight. But it is better to go to the clinic as soon as possible. Doctors will give an antidote and possibly put the animal into a drug-induced sleep. Delay is dangerous because prolonged contractions can lead to irreversible changes in the brain,” said the expert.

Rat venom also stops blood clotting, which causes internal bleeding. Rapid breathing and palpitations of the dog, trembling of the body, vomiting and diarrhea with blood can speak of poisoning with rat poison. Pets also have a fever, bruises, and blood from the nose.

“If rat poisoning is suspected, vitamin K1 should be given at a rate of 2.5 mg per 1 kg of body weight twice daily for up to 14 days. However, if there are symptoms such as bleeding and bruising in the body, you need to go to the clinic immediately. It is important that in case of poisoning with rat poison, the symptoms do not develop immediately, but after 3-7 days, so it is necessary to carefully monitor the condition of the pet, ”warned the head of the intensive care unit.

In order not to harm the pet, you should not induce vomiting while providing first aid – it can get into the respiratory tract and aggravate the situation. Also, it is impossible to put spoons, forks and other cutlery in the dog’s mouth during contractions.

“If the dog ate something suspicious on the street before the symptoms started, you can give an enterosorbent such as activated charcoal or enterosgel. It is also important to provide your pet with plenty of fluids. If there are signs of poisoning, it is necessary to urgently go to the clinic,” advised Elena Kaurkina.

It should be noted that vomiting is also prohibited if the dog eats the bait with broken glass, nails or thumbtacks. This could cause further injury.

“The only thing to do in this situation is to come to the veterinary clinic as soon as possible and the doctors remove the sharp objects before they go through the stomach. In the intestines, it can lead to perforation, blockage, severe trauma in the walls of the organ, and this can lead to fatal results.

He stated that in an emergency, enterosorbents, vitamin K1 and B6 should be in every home first aid kit.
