Scientists from the Technical University of Munich found that kidney failure patients who do light exercise feel better and are less likely to go to the hospital than patients with a sedentary lifestyle. Research published NEJM Evidence.

Severe renal dysfunction requires dialysis several times a week. This procedure allows you to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood.

The study included nearly a thousand patients from 21 dialysis centers in Germany. For one year, half of the participants exercised at least one to three times a week. The workouts included 30 minutes of aerobics on a stationary bike and 30 minutes of strength training with weights, resistance bands and balls. The training was done by movement specialists, the loads were adapted to the capacity of each patient. The other half of the participants lived as usual and served as the control group.

After one year, the health of the study participants who received exercise training had improved significantly. Compared to the start of the experiment, they were able to do more repetitions and walk longer distances in six minutes in the one-minute sit-stand test. In the control group, these values ​​were even lower at the end of the study period than at baseline.

Active participants spent an average of two days in the hospital during the study, compared to an average of five days in the control group.

Researchers believe that exercise programs should be offered to all dialysis patients.
