His name is Leo, and although his name or nationality is not important in this story, he was born in Berlin forty years ago. For a long time he lived on the streets of Barcelona among cardboard and worn blankets.
He doesn’t do it alone. She sleeps with her dog “Fido”, a Labrador hybrid with whom she shares solitude and sidewalks. It is not typical of a person begging on the street with his dog to soften the hearts of those who help him. His story is more of a man who lives in a big house with his dog, who gets laid off from a job and upsets his chances of an emotional breakup.
Since then, the two have adapted to having no other happiness than to be apart and to share what little life has given them. But fate still hid one last misfortune for them.
A few days ago I got a call from Leo. He didn’t need to introduce himself. Ever since she told me her story years ago and asked me for help with a problem her dog was having, we’ve always been in touch. Therefore, when my phone rang and I heard her voice with a strong and precise German accent, I immediately thought she was not going to say anything nice to me.
-Raúl, I’ve been diagnosed with cancer and the treatment continues as long as it’s unclear. I don’t care about myself, I always thought I lived too long. I was hurt for my dog ”Fido”. I don’t want it to end up in a cage. Can you help me find a family for him?-
I promised to do this, and thanks to social networks, we found a couple who offered to host him. I accompanied them and attended the farewell of Leo and Fido. It was so exciting that it would have been even worse to tell. My only wish is that when everything happens, life will bring them back together. While this is happening, I will continue to demand, as I have done for years, that procedures be established to allow temporary adoption in voluntary families of animals whose owners are no longer able to adopt due to lengthy and intensive treatment, hospitalization, etc. acceptance or any extreme gravity problem. This is not a whim, but a matter of sensitivity, humanity, and above all, the health and well-being of both the animal to be protected more, and the owner, who can recover and face more quickly. The effects are stronger and more active. They negate your disease.
