Scientists from the Isfahan University of Technology in Iran found that people who ate more unhealthy plant foods such as juices, potatoes, refined grains and foods high in sugar had a higher risk of developing depression and anxiety. Research results had Published in PLOS One magazine.
However, consumption of healthy plant foods (healthy vegetables, whole grains, fruits, nuts, legumes, vegetable oils, tea and coffee) was not associated with changes in the risk of developing these disorders.
The study included 2,456 healthy people aged 18 years or older from five cities in Iran. Data collection was carried out between February 2018 and July 2019. Participants were expected to be free from the serious medical conditions identified by the researchers and to consume an average of 800 to 4200 kilocalories per day.
Participants filled out a questionnaire about their age, gender, socioeconomic status and habits. Food intake was assessed using a questionnaire, as was the severity of depression and anxiety symptoms.
The results showed that participants who reported eating more unhealthy plant foods were more likely to experience symptoms of depression and anxiety. Scientists have not been able to establish a causal relationship – future work will be devoted to this.
