The World Health Organization’s Agency for Research on Cancer has declared the artificial sweetener aspartame a possible carcinogen. It is reported on the website. WHO.

After reviewing three human observational studies, the WHO agency IARC concluded that aspartame may cause cancer. The scientists noted that research on aspartame shows that at commonly used doses, safety is not a major concern. However, some effects found require additional higher-quality research.

“The average 68-pound person would need to consume about 14 cans of diet drinks or about 74 bags of aspartame each day during their lifetime to experience any adverse effects. It is clear that this level of consumption is unrealistic, not recommended, and inconsistent with the intended use of these ingredients, said Robert Rankin, chairman of the Artificial Sweeteners Trading Group.

Several other industry groups, including the US Food and Drug Administration, have issued statements challenging the WHO’s new decision.

Francesco Branca, Director of the Department of Nutrition and Food Safety, noted that occasional consumption of aspartame is unlikely to pose a risk to most people.
