“Mr Kennedy opposes Ukraine’s NATO membership, considering it a provocation and a potential source of military conflict with Russia, including a possible nuclear conflict,” the candidate’s office said in a statement.
Kennedy said the focus should now be on reducing the escalation of the conflict and working towards a peaceful solution that respects the security, sovereignty and rights of both sides.
At the Vilnius summit, NATO leaders endorsed a long-term support package for Ukraine, including the creation of a NATO-Ukraine Council that would speed Kiev’s process of joining the alliance, and the removal of the membership action plan requirement. However, specific dates and frameworks for Ukraine’s accession to NATO have yet to be determined. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg noted that the invitation to the alliance will be made only after it has been verified that all members of the alliance have fulfilled the relevant conditions.
