Scientists from the Federal University of Uberlandia discovered that physical activity can lower blood pressure, which increases after stress. Research published in the journal scientific reports.

The authors reviewed data from 5058 studies, selecting the 23 most relevant and high-quality for a comprehensive analysis. A total of 1121 people participated in the research.

Participants trained three to four times a week for two months to a year. The exercises were of medium to high intensity and the average duration of the training session was 50 minutes on average. The most common source of stress used in these jobs was an arithmetic problem.

In 21 studies, participants did aerobic exercise (increased heart rate), weight training in five, and yoga in two.

In 64% of studies, researchers observed a decrease in blood pressure (systolic, diastolic, or both) elevated by stress.

While answering a math problem doesn’t equate to everyday stress, the results could mean that exercise is an important way to combat high blood pressure. Previous studies have shown that hypertension is associated with an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and chronic cardiovascular disease.
