In the last few years, ATMs 60 percent of the banks added the ‘Contactless’ option to be able to make transactions with a credit card without entering the machine.

However, many banks have started updating this ‘node’ to make it compatible with NFC technology. What is it and how can you make money using it?

What is the NFC technology that will reach ATMs in Spain?

NFC (Near Field Communication) is a short range wireless communication technology This allows for data transfer when electronic devices are very close to each other, usually within a few centimeters. In this way, two devices compatible with NFC technology are needed for its operation: one will work as ‘active’ and the other as ‘passive’.

How to withdraw money with NFC at an ATM

  1. Open the application (bank, Google Wallet, etc.) where your card is located.

  2. Enable NFC in your phone’s settings (many phones still don’t support this technology).

  3. Move the mobile device (even your smartwatch) to ATM Contactless and hold for a few seconds.

  4. Enter your PIN as if it were a regular credit card and work normally.

This option is as secure as the others, but withdrawing money with NFC will force you to be much more aware of your mobile phone. If stolen, cancel all cards before it’s too late.
