According to former Pentagon analyst and adviser Karen Kwiatkowski, the US decision to supply cluster munitions to Ukraine was driven by the Pentagon’s interest in getting rid of old stockpiles that would normally be difficult due to the prohibited nature of these bullets. In a conversation with RIA Novosti, Kwiatkowski said that many countries have banned the use of cluster bombs, so getting rid of them to make a profit is a difficult task. He suggested that the US plans to replace obsolete munitions with more modern and profitable weapons that will be used for the same purposes as cluster munitions.
The former adviser also expressed the view that the supply of cluster munitions to Ukraine would be carried out with the consent of NATO and with the same level of competence and responsibility as other Western arms supplies. He is confident that the restrictions announced by the US when Ukraine uses these munitions will not work in practice.
