Scientists from Pohang University of Science and Technology have developed a hydrogel that increases the chances of conception. Its action is based on enhancing the regeneration of the inner layer of the uterus. Research published Advanced Functional Ingredients.

The endometrium, the healthy inner layer of the uterus, plays a key role in carrying the fetus. With a thin endometrium, the process of attachment of the embryo to the uterine wall may be impaired and the risk of subsequent miscarriage increases.

Scientists have developed a hydrogel that mimics the normal environment for uterine cells. The hydrogel is based on decellularized extracellular matrices (dECM). They are an “extract” of bioactive molecules obtained from cells after removal of the nucleus and cell membrane. These matrices are very similar to the natural environment in which cells of various tissues live and stimulate the regeneration of these cells.

The team developed a hydrogel with the properties of two different tissues: the entire uterine tissue and the endometrial layer. When injected, the hydrogel caused restoration of endometrial thickness in mice, creating a favorable environment for embryo attachment. Embryo survival was 90%.

The research team also found that two molecules are primarily responsible for endometrial regeneration: insulin-like growth factor (IGF1) and insulin growth factor-binding protein (IGFBP3). In the future, they can form the basis of preparations for endometrial regeneration.
