In an interview with socialbites.ca, Mufti of Moscow Ildar Alyautdinov described the Day of Family, Love and Loyalty, celebrated on July 8 in Russia, as a pleasant opportunity to spend time with the family. He also noted that for strong and harmonious relationships in the family, spouses should invest in relationships every day.
“Family happiness is the work of both spouses throughout their lives. It is important to invest every day, not just on certain dates, so that relationships are strong and children grow in harmony. Such public holidays are an additional pleasant opportunity to spend time with family and take care of each other. It will also be useful to please family members today with small gifts and spending time together. But it is more important to maintain these warm relations all the time and not be a one-day phenomenon.”
Alyautdinov added that Islam attaches special importance to family values and religious holidays are designed to strengthen family ties.
“The Holy Quran and the Prophet. We also see from the biography of the last messenger Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) how respectful and respectful his attitude towards his household was. It is important to note that Islamic holidays are also designed to strengthen family and kinship ties. For example, the last Eid-al-Adha reminds us of the importance of maintaining unity, both within the family and within society as a whole. For this reason, the Spiritual Directorate of Muslims of Moscow organizes a large open-air family festival “SacrificeFest” every year, where you can spend time with the whole family.
In June 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the official celebration of the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity on July 8. The holiday was established “to preserve traditional family values and the spiritual and moral education of children and youth.”
The Day of Family, Love and Fidelity is dedicated to the Orthodox Memorial Day of Saint Prince Peter and his wife Fevronia, who are considered the guardians of the family and marriage. The symbol of the holiday is a daisy. From these flowers she weaves wreaths and gives bouquets. Getting married on this day is also a popular tradition.
