With a sharp jump in air temperature or atmospheric pressure, many people experience headaches, fatigue, joint and muscle pain, and other symptoms that often pass on their own and without consequences. However, for some, a change in weather can trigger conditions that are dangerous to health and life. Ekaterina Demyanovskaya, a candidate of medical sciences, a neurologist at the Gemotest Laboratory, told socialbites.ca.

“First of all, a sharp change in weather is dangerous for people with diseases of the cardiovascular system: they are susceptible to fluctuations in both atmospheric pressure and air temperature. When the pressure rises or becomes too hot, the load on the cardiovascular system increases, which can lead to aggravation of the existing pathology and complications such as arrhythmias, hypotensive or hypertensive crisis. In particularly severe cases, a heart attack or stroke may develop,” the doctor said.

According to him, in order to reduce the impact of weather on well-being, people with cardiovascular diseases should discuss with their doctor in advance the actions that will ensure their survival during the dangerous period. For example, this could be a change in medication or drinking regimen. If you feel unwell, you should seek medical help immediately.

“A sharp change in weather is also dangerous for people with respiratory diseases, including allergies. They may have coughing fits and have difficulty breathing. This is because the concentration of allergens, dust, gases and other substances in the air increases in windless, hot or very dry weather. People with respiratory system pathologies should not leave the house and use air purifiers if possible, and should consult a doctor if they feel worse,” warned Ekaterina Demyanovskaya.

The neurologist noted that atmospheric pressure drops also have a negative effect on people who are unhealthy or in weak spirits.

“They can become irritable, they are more likely to have suicidal thoughts. In sudden weather changes, you should listen carefully to your feelings and if there is a disturbance, do not try to solve the problem on your own, seek help,” concluded the candidate of science.
