Even if a person has recently had the meningococcal vaccine, the vaccine may not work with high doses of pathogen or strain incompatibility. Pavel Volchkov, an immunologist and head of the MIPT Genomic Engineering Laboratory, told socialbites.ca about this.

There are different strains of the meningococcus bacteria and in some cases cause meningitis, a deadly inflammation of the lining of the brain. Different vaccines are effective against certain strains, but biologist Volchkov emphasized that even if the strain matches, the vaccine will not work.

“The meningococcal vaccine is a preventative measure, and if a person gets a high dose of the pathogen from a carrier, then it won’t work. Therefore, even those who have recently been vaccinated should be careful, ”Volchkov noted.

We can also say with certainty that the meningococcal vaccine is not included in the vaccination calendar of children in Russia, so there is no immunity to this infection in the Russian population.

“Although it cannot be ruled out that in the natural environment some people may encounter this infection and have antibodies,” Volchkov said.

Currently, it is reported that 10 people in Yekaterinburg have been infected with meningococcus, two of whom have died from meningococcal meningitis.
