Scientists from Harvard Medical School have found that the clitoris and penis have special nerve endings that specialize in responding to vibration. The results of the study are presented in the preprint catalogue. bioRxiv and is considered preliminary before publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Krause’s tiny bodies, which are clusters of neurons in the genitals, were first discovered by sexologists in the 1800s. In a new study, scientists used male and female mice for the first time to elucidate their functions. It turns out that they are responsible for the vibration response: Krause’s bodies became most sensitive when the animal’s genitals were touched with a vibrating device or stroked with a brush.

At the same time, the neuron density in the clitoris was 15 times greater than in the penis. The scientists also found that activating neurons with light led to erections in men.

In addition, genetically engineered female mice lacking Krause bodies were less sensitive to male sexual behavior and completed intercourse more quickly than normal females. Genetically modified men without Krause bodies took longer to initiate intercourse and ejaculated less frequently.

The authors noted that the findings suggest that neuronal stimulation plays an important role in generating sexual desire and healthy sexual responses.
