On July 2, 2023, at 7:14 PM EST (July 3: 2:14 PM Moscow time), an extremely intense flash of the Sun occurred, causing radio frequency blackouts in the country. Portal reports science alert.

The radio outage was brief but intense. Reaching a maximum score of X1.0, the flare ionized the upper layers of Earth’s atmosphere and interfered with high-frequency radio signals on the Sun-facing side of the planet at that time.

The impact on Earth was milder than it could have been, as the outbreak cleared without further incident. Astronomers did not notice any signs of a coronal mass ejection that usually accompanies such events.

The eruption followed the ascending trajectory of the current solar cycle. Several turbulent months are expected, as an 11-year solar peak is expected ahead. According to the Belgian Royal Observatory, the number of sunspots hit a 21-year high in June, with an average of 163 sunspots per day. Currently, the Sun is going through a period of ascension in its 11-year cycle of activity. The next peak in solar intensity is expected in July 2025.
