Scientists from Nizhnevartovsk State University (NVGU) presented new evidence of future glaciation of the Yugra, they write about it DEA News. During a scientific expedition on the territory of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Yugra (KhMAO – Yugra), scientists discovered traces of the activity of an ancient glacier, which indicates that the region may face a glacial scenario in the future.

Experts have discovered crystalline hard rocks and minerals that were formed during igneous geological processes and could not have arisen in sedimentary rocks of the Quaternary age (2.5 million years) of the Yugra. This indicates that these rocks entered the region from the outside and that there was a glacier in the past.

Scientist Sergey Korkin, head of the scientific laboratory for geoecological research at Novosibirsk State University, explained that historically, glaciation in the Quaternary period occurred in several stages, among which were warm periods. The Yugra is currently in a very warm interglacial period, but the region may face glaciation in the future.

During the expedition, geoecologists discovered a two-layer moraine, which indicates that the glaciers in the area had advanced and retreated twice. Also, scientists discovered an unusual “desert” area for the Yugra, which should have been a forest. This phenomenon is associated with global warming, which can lead to the expansion of the open sand area without vegetation.

Previously, physicists calculated where this works best to hide from a nuclear explosion.
