Election processes in Russia always attract a lot of attention, provoke criticism of various circumstances, provoke discussions about the country’s present and future, as well as discussions about the consequences from the past – all this shows how elections are such an important part of Russia’s political life. . This opinion was conveyed to socialbites.ca by Alexander Asafov, a political observer and political scientist of the Govorit Moskva radio station, a member of the Public Council of the Russian Federation.
“Over the past decades, Russia’s electoral system has become one of the most advanced in the world. Elections at various levels in the country are open and transparent. And this is confirmed by international experts,” says Alexander Asafov.
He states that many electoral innovations have been introduced in the country, such as the remote electronic voting system, which until now has seemed inaccessible to so-called old democracies. In Russia, DEG has become a socio-political norm.
“It is remarkable where our electoral system is going and at what stages,” the expert adds.
In addition, Asafov emphasizes that in September 2023, the new regions of Russia will participate in elections for the first time under Russian law.
According to him, when deciding to hold elections, consultations were held with law enforcement agencies, the experience of the referendum in the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions last year was taken into account, and business trips of experts were organized.
“Obviously, the decision to choose in the new regions is justified,” says the expert.
He believes that holding elections, even under martial law, affirms the right of those living in new areas to determine their own future.
“For the new citizens of the country, the opportunity to participate in the elections is of great importance not only in terms of electing its representative power and senior officials of the regions, but also in terms of inclusion in the entire Russian political agenda. ” Asafov sums up.
