Scientists of the Zoological Museum of Moscow State University. MV Lomonosov, together with experts from the Institute of Developmental Biology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and his foreign colleagues, announced the new taxa of the nudibranch mollusk Dendronotus, which were discovered in Norway and the United Kingdom, supposedly thanks to civilian scientists. in other words, scientific volunteers. Information about the discovery was published in the journal Variation.

We are talking about two taxa of the nudibranch mollusk-dendronotus. The new species Dendronotus keatleyae is widely described in Norway and Great Britain, and the new subspecies Dendronotus arcticus gartensis is described in Norway. The discovery of a new mollusk, which is quite large for science (up to 35 mm in length) from the North Atlantic, where taxonomic studies have begun since the time of Carl Linnaeus, is rare. During scuba diving, civilian scientists discovered the unusual dendronotus crawling on hydroids that served as food for them. Outwardly, these mollusks resembled the Dendronotus species known to science, but upon careful observation some differences in their structure and color were found.

The divers explained their findings to Russian scientists who conducted research using morphological and molecular phylogenetic methods. As a result, new taxa were discovered through joint efforts.

The new species Dendronotus keatleyae is named after British citizen scientist Libby Keatley, while the subspecies Dendronotus arcticus gartensis was proposed by Norwegian civil scientists after the island in Norway where the subspecies was found.
