Scientists from the Rutgers School have found that physical activity, with the most effective evening exercises and movements after meals, can significantly improve sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes, even without losing weight. Research published American Journal of Medicine.

As part of the analysis, the researchers reviewed the results of dozens of high-quality studies. They have proven that aerobic exercise that raises the heart rate (cycling, swimming, and walking) helps control blood sugar levels.

Strength training (with dumbbells, resistance bands, or body weight) improves insulin sensitivity in people with type 2 diabetes. High insulin sensitivity allows the body’s cells to use blood sugar more efficiently, resulting in lower blood sugar levels.

Staying active throughout the day and taking regular breaks to move around during sedentary work helped study participants control their blood sugar and insulin levels.

“A combination of aerobic exercise and weightlifting is probably better than the two. Afternoon exercise may do better for glucose control than morning exercise, and exercise after a meal may help a little more than before a meal. And you don’t need to lose weight to see the benefits of exercise.” the scientists explained.

The benefits of exercise for diabetics were known before, but a new study has clarified the optimal training parameters.
