Scientists at Northwestern University found that people who live near lots of green spaces are on average 2.5 years younger biologically than those who live in less green spaces. Research published in the journal Science Advances.

The study included 924 people living in four US cities: Birmingham, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Oakland. Using satellite imagery, the scientists were able to measure the overall proportion of greenery and the presence of large parks within 5 km of the participants’ residences.

Biological age was estimated using analysis of specific methyl tags of the DNA molecule. Residents of greener areas were on average 2.5 years younger biologically. The biological age of women living in green areas decreased more than men.

Researchers did not analyze green quality or green space type. In addition, factors not considered in this study, such as stress and social connections, may also affect biological age. However, the study’s authors believe that urban planning should include expanding green infrastructure to increase life expectancy.

“When we think about staying healthy as we get older, we often focus on things like eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep. However, our study shows that the environment we live in, especially the community and access to green spaces, is also important for the protection of health in old age.
