Scientists from Antalya Belek University have proven that music lessons help improve math grades in children and adolescents. Research published in the journal Educational Studies.

For analysis, the researchers selected the results of 55 high-quality studies involving nearly 78,000 children and adolescents from around the world, from kindergarten students to college students.

Students took math tests before and after attending the music class. Math test scores were compared with those of a control group who did not attend music classes.

About 69% of students learning to play musical instruments and 58% of students who took regular music lessons (which included listening to music and singing) improved their scores more than students who did not receive musical intervention.

Integrated lessons, where music was incorporated into math lessons, had the biggest impact, with about 73% of students improving their grades. Younger students learning basic arithmetic benefited the most.

The authors noted that mathematics and music have a lot in common, such as the use of symbol symmetry. Both topics require abstract thinking and quantitative reasoning. Arithmetic is particularly well suited to learning through music because its basic concepts such as fractions and ratios are also fundamental to music.
