Scientists from Showa University in Tokyo found that the ARMS procedure effectively relieved patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) from symptoms, particularly heartburn and pain. Research published in the journal digestive endoscopy.

The trial included 88 GERD patients who underwent antireflux mucosectomy (ARMS) from June 2012 to June 2017. The researchers found that the procedure provided long-term symptom relief in 68.3% of patients, and 42% were able to stop their GERD medication.

In addition, ARMS has also been effective in patients with GERD refractory to standard drug therapy (proton pump inhibitors) and patients with hypersensitivity to reflux. The second form of GERD is particularly often accompanied by severe heartburn and chest pain.

In GERD, stomach contents enter the esophagus (reflux), causing acid damage and may also be accompanied by heartburn, chest pain, hoarseness, and inflammation of the palatine tonsils and pharynx. GERD is usually treated conservatively with lifestyle changes and medications, but in some cases, the disease is difficult to treat. ARMS is a simple, no-cut endoscopic procedure that removes part of the stomach lining.
