The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced the features of the movement on the asteroid Dimorph. In this respect informs agency press office.

As part of the Hera mission planned for 2026, ESA will send a probe and two cube satellites to the asteroid Dimorph. They will have to investigate the results at close range conflicts With the DART mission apparatus, this asteroid and cube moons will need to attempt a soft landing.

Scientists tried to imagine exactly how this would happen, and additionally investigated how astronauts should behave on this body. Dimorph has a maximum diameter of 177 meters, so gravity is extremely weak.

“The rocks that cover the surface of Dimorph look much larger. Typical ones are 5-7 meters in diameter and the largest is the size of a house. Getting around these rocks will likely require a lot more climbing and jumping than walking. Be careful, though – it’s very hard. If you jump, you may never fall again, because you will exceed your escape velocity due to ultra-low gravity,” said Naomi Murdoch, a French planetary scientist working on a cube satellite landing plan. Also, the edges of the stones will be extremely sharp, as neither water nor air dulls them.

The DART mission was launched in November 2021 to test Earth’s asteroid defense technology. Meanwhile, a small spacecraft entered rendezvous orbit with the orbiting near-Earth asteroids Didim (780 meters in Diameter) and Dimorph (160 meters). The collision occurred with the smaller Dimorph at a speed of about 6.6 km/h.
