In the photo transmitted from the surface of Mars, scientists noticed a round stone with a hole in the middle, resembling a donut. Photograph sent SETI Institute.
The picture was taken by the Perseverance rover in the Crater Lake area on June 23. A few small pieces of the same color were scattered around the holed stone in the middle, probably torn from it. According to SETI, the boulder and small pieces around it could be a fallen meteorite that formed in space or as part of another cosmic body.
Since February 2021, the Perseverance rover has been exploring the Lake Jezero crater, a 49-kilometer stretch formed by a meteorite fall about 4 billion years ago. Then the crater turned into a lake, a river began to flow into it, which periodically became stormy and could drag large boulders. The crater dried up as Mars lost water, but scientists believe it makes most sense to look for examples of life at the bottom of the ancient lake.
