The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced the results of the spacesuit concept competition. In this respect informs Universe Today.
ESA currently does not have its own manned spacecraft or station (other than ISS modules). However, this situation may change in the future and therefore the agency tries to maintain a technological and ideological reserve for this situation. In this context, a competition was held to develop the spacesuit concept for non-vehicle activities.
90 works were submitted to the competition, experts selected five winners. The project in the picture was created by Oussama Guarras with a focus on “modernity, advanced technology, innovation and sustainability”.
ESA has invited all winners on a trip to the European Astronaut Center located near Cologne, Germany.
“I believe there will come a time in the coming years when an ESA astronaut will wear a European suit to explore the surface of the Moon and Mars,” said Hervé Stevenin, head of the centre’s EVA preparation department. – With this event [конкурсом] our imagination has taken a small step in this exciting direction.”
Proposed suits must both withstand the extreme conditions of space to protect the astronauts and be recognizable and recognizable enough to create a unique image. Mandatory elements were only a backpack for the life support system and a visor on the helmet. The competition was open to anyone interested in space and design.
