Despite the United States imposing blocking sanctions (SDN list) against MIPT, the university ranked third among Russian universities in the Nature Index international scientometric ranking. This was reported to socialbites.ca in the press service of the university.

The Nature Index (NI) is calculated from publications in 145 leading journals in the natural sciences, engineering and biomedical sciences. Ratings of countries and individual organizations are compiled annually. The NI indicator is used to evaluate the scientific performance of universities.

In 2022, due to the sanctions, most universities and scientific institutions in Russia showed deterioration in the indicators in the Nature Index. At the same time, the publication dynamics of MIPT and Skoltech decreased less than the other organizations in the leading group, which brought MIPT to third place in the ranking and Skoltech to fourth place among Russian universities.

“The results of the rating show that, despite the pressure of sanctions on our country and individual Russian universities, the research of Russian scientists continues to be in demand by top scientific publications,” MIPT Rector Dmitry Livanov told socialbites.ca.

The number of publications by Russian scientists, calculated using the Nature Index method, decreased by 19% from 553.08 to 448.19. Russia fell 2 places in the overall ranking. The biggest deterioration in broadcast indicators was in ITMO (-32%), NRC Kurchatov Institute (-31%) and St. Petersburg State University (-26%). In 2022, only 2 of the top 10 institutions in Russia showed a slight increase in the indicator: JINR and HSE.

In other countries, there was no change in the top 10 countries in the ranking. China showed the highest growth (2nd place, +20% NI). The worst performers in the top ten are Japan (5th place, -7% NI) and Germany (3rd place, -6% NI). The overall increase in NI for the top ten was 8.9%.
