Employees and students of the Don State Technical University have developed a system for denoting Chinese words with letters of the Russian alphabet. It surpasses the current way of writing Chinese words in English letters and will make it easier for Russian speakers to learn Chinese. This was reported to socialbites.ca in the press service of the university.
The idea for the project was born in September last year when, in the first lesson on Chinese phonetics, students suggested using the Russian alphabet to learn Chinese. According to scientists, a Russian-speaking person who is now starting to learn Chinese must first really learn the English alphabet and the rules for reading it. The project took 9 months to complete.
“75% of English words are not read according to the rules, so the English language artificially complicates the learning of Chinese,” Marina Semenova, head of the Department of Integrative and Digital Linguistics at DSTU, told socialbites.ca.
The researchers tested the system among students who had never learned Chinese. The same text was deciphered in Latin (Pinyin) and Cyrillic script. Assistance with testing was provided by DSTU graduate students from China. As a result, the students read the text written in Russian letters with 99.96% accuracy and the text in English with 84.5% accuracy.
The development is in the process of securing copyright, it will then be made publicly available on the internet. The team also plans to adapt the educational materials to Cyrillic.
Semenova said that at the end of the 19th century, the Palladium transcription system was created in Russian science, but it did not become widespread in China due to the lack of tonal markings (Chinese has four, and China has four). syllables may have different values depending on the tone). In addition, over 150 years, both Russian and Chinese have developed strongly, including in the field of phonetics, so the Palladium system is almost inapplicable to the real sound of the Russian language.
