Labor inspectors decided to halt their strike indefinitely at noon this Tuesday, despite failing to meet their targets. The “sine die” strike of the “labor police” lasted for one day, and the five centers assembled justified their decision not to continue the strike because government partners had politicized the strike.
The conflict in the Labor Inspectorate arose as a result of a conflict between them. Ministry of Labor Treasury and Public Function – responsible for inspection- and – responsible for the civil service structure. Differences of opinion among coalition partners are delaying implementation of the organisation’s pending reform. And the anger of the centre, which has accelerated in recent weeks with the election progress, has gradually increased.
However, the preparation for the current indefinite strike did not have the unity in which the unitary platform of the unions had moved so far. Although there were six power plants that announced the strike, there were five that eventually supported the strike, and the CCOO got away with internal disagreements while planning the protests.
Thus, the investigators launched the first indefinite strike in the government agency’s more than 100-year history, by July 23. The claim was to get assurances from the Government that they would approve the agency’s new organizational structure before dissolving the Cortes. Since the messages they received from the Executive were not on that line, they decided to end the strike.
“The Spanish Government instrumentalized the Labor Inspectorate when it was a public service that we have been working on since 1906 to secure the rights of workers,” the statement made by the calling unions said. The Labor Party accused the Treasury of giving preferential treatment to officials of PSOE-led ministries and undermining negotiations with investigators with an election key. Something the Treasury denies.
