Diluted coffee can be used as a slug repellent. In this respect informs University of Oregon press office.

In a press release, soil scientist Linda Brewer outlines previous research done at their university. According to the scientist, studies show that treating the soil with 1-2% coffee causes 100% of the slugs that leave the treated soil and subsequently die from caffeine poisoning. A 2% caffeine solution applied to the orchid growing medium killed 95% of orchid snails and was superior to metaldehyde, a common pest control.

To wet the soil, the scientist recommends adding 1 part water to 2 parts strong brewed coffee, for example, 1 glass of water to 2 glasses of coffee. To reduce leaf eating by slugs, a thinner solution is required – 9 parts water to 1 part brewed coffee. The resulting mixture can be applied with a sprayer. At the same time, the specialist calls for caution.

“A smart approach would be to apply the diluted coffee to a few leaves and wait a few warm, sunny days to see if burns or other damage occur. If there is no damage, continue with the process,” he said.
