Experts from Sechenov University have started building the first salivary biobank in Russia as part of the Priority 2030 strategic academic leadership program. The collection of samples will allow the development of methods for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. This was reported to socialbites.ca by the press service of the university.
The salivary biobank will make it possible to find patterns between the levels of biomarkers in saliva and the state of the body, which will allow the creation of new methods for diagnosis and personalized treatment for various diseases.
“Biological fluids reflect most of the processes occurring in the body. With the help of biological source saliva collection, it will be possible to study markers of oncological diseases. It can also be used in the study of autoimmune, cardiovascular, endocrine pathologies. The collection is created on the basis of the existing biobank of Sechenov University, whose sources include more than 140,000 blood, urine, tissue and other biomaterial samples from Sechenov University clinics and industrial partners.
The initial size of the collection will be 300 samples, it will be renewed in the future. Scientists will collect biomaterial from visitors to the clinics of Sechenov University, both healthy and with various diseases – the collection should reflect the state of health of the population.
The first to access the collection will be scientists from Sechenov University, but in the future specialists from other clinical and research centers will also be able to benefit from the collection. The collection will become a resource base for basic and applied research whose results will be useful to pharmaceutical companies and clinical diagnostic laboratories.
