Researchers at the Smidt Heart Institute found that one in ten patients with high blood pressure developed hypertension that was resistant to standard therapy, and they also found the type of medication most effective for those patients. The research was published in the journal Hypertension.

Blood pressure medications can help prevent a heart attack or stroke in people with hypertension. But there is a form of hypertension that is resistant to drugs. In a new study, scientists showed that the prevalence of this condition is lower than expected, but still quite common – in almost every hypertensive person.

Scientists analyzed the electronic medical records of approximately 2.5 million patients, 55% of whom suffered from arterial hypertension. 8.5%, that is, approximately 114 thousand people, had drug-resistant hypertension.

Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MCRs) are the most effective in controlling blood pressure, but have been used in only 11% of patients with drug-resistant hypertension due to the difficulty in diagnosing this form of hypertension.

The scientists noted that before diagnosing drug-resistant hypertension, clinicians must first rule out other possible causes of a patient’s high blood pressure: patient stress due to medication non-compliance, poor medication choices, or hospital visits. If a patient is taking four or more antihypertensive drugs to control blood pressure, clinicians should consider evaluating alternative causes of hypertension.
