4 suspects arrested in radioactive cesium smuggling case in Moscow

Moscow Khoroshevsky District Court detained four defendants in the case of smuggling and illegal export of cesium-137 radioactive substance. It has been reported DEA Newsreferring to the press service of the court.

The press service reported that the suspects Abdulaev, Sakhalov, Shamilov and Takhmazov were detained until 21 August.

They further noted that the investigator’s petition to arrest the fifth suspect or to choose a milder preventive measure had not yet been received.

23 June FSB together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs arrested five people are trying to smuggle abroad a kilogram of cesium-137, a radioactive core produced in nuclear reactors that can be used to create a “dirty bomb”. According to the intelligence service, the criminal group intended to transfer cesium-137 for $ 3.5 million “for use at the expense of Russian interests” during a special operation.

Criminal proceedings were brought against the detainees about preparations for smuggling radioactive materials. All five were arrested and confessed to their actions, the FSB reported.
