NASA plans to launch the MANTIS cube satellite telescope to study the sky in the ultraviolet range. In this respect informs University of Colorado at Boulder.

MANTIS, whose name stands for Near Star Viewing Event, costs $8.5 million and is hundreds of times cheaper than large telescopes like Hubble and James Webb. While most of the cost savings came from miniaturization of the machine, which would be slightly larger than a toaster, Hubble was the size of a bus. MANTIS will be developed and manufactured by the University of Colorado at Boulder.

MANTIS will be able to observe the sky in the ultraviolet range, including far UV, approaching the wavelength of X-rays. The new telescope will complement the James Webb Observatory, launched in 2021 with a mission to study exoplanet atmospheres, scientists said. The UV telescope is useful for observing stellar activity, and the MANTIS data will complement James Webb’s own observations so scientists can decide whether a planet near that star would be habitable.
