New chicken feed made from food waste helps reduce poultry farming costs and greenhouse gas emissions. This was reported by the press service of the University of New England (UNE).
Waste for the pilot batch was collected from businesses such as breweries, hospitals, nursing homes and hotels. Using a patented production process from Food Recycle, the waste was turned into a granular powder suitable for feeding poultry. After extensive testing, the researchers found that the quality of the eggs remained high and did not affect the health or well-being of the animals.
“The rising cost of commodities such as soybean meal combined with the increasing demand for low-carbon poultry products has put tremendous pressure on the poultry industry to explore alternative feed ingredients,” said Thi Hiep Dao, co-author of the paper.
According to experts, 65% of the cost of poultry farming falls on the purchase of feed. The switch to waste food is expected to reduce the cost of eggs and meat, as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 76% and 25%, respectively.
