At the Department of Skin and Venereal Diseases of Sechenov University together with the Institute of Pharmacy. AP Nelyubina has created a new cream based on carnosine, an antioxidant developed domestically for the treatment of vitiligo. Carnosine was not used in the treatment of vitiligo before. This was reported to socialbites.ca at the First Moscow State Medical University named after IM. Sechenov.
The cream is aimed at preventing the progression of the disease, that is, it protects against the appearance of new spots.
Vitiligo is a skin discoloration characterized by the appearance of colorless, usually symmetrically located, milky-white patches of various sizes and shapes. In terms of health, this disease is not dangerous, but some points of vitiligo look ugly and cause psychological discomfort. Today in Russia about 4% suffer from vitiligo.
“The fact is that oxidative processes occur in the skin with vitiligo, and imported antioxidant drugs are quite expensive, so we developed a domestic drug based on carnosine. We have now started preclinical studies, Konstantin Lomonosov, professor of the Department of Skin and Venereal Diseases at Sechenov University, told socialbites.ca.
Treatment of vitiligo is a very time-consuming process and includes a wide variety of drugs (ointments, tablets, injections) and physiotherapeutic methods, which must be selected individually for the patient, taking into account his age, comorbidity, duration, degree. disease progression, localization and prevalence.
Currently, Sechenov University is working on the creation of a progressive method of vitiligo treatment using cell technologies. The new method will allow to achieve a pronounced and longer-lasting therapeutic effect in patients with vitiligo who are resistant to other treatment modalities of the disease.
