Former FBI officer convicted of spying on behalf of the USSR and Russia dies

Robert Hanssen, a Soviet and Russian intelligence agent, a former senior official of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has died in an American prison. He was 79 years old, reports DEA NewsWith reference to the United States Department of Justice.

According to the ministry, on Monday, June 5, inmate Hanssen was found unconscious in Florence prison in Colorado, USA.

The former FBI officer was arrested in 2001. It was claimed that he worked for the Soviet Union and Russia for many years. Hanssen was accused of transmitting classified information, including electronic intelligence data, to Moscow, and also exposed several double agents.

He was sentenced to 15 life sentences in 2002. Hanssen served his sentence in the most secure federal prison in the United States, near Florence, Colorado.
