Scientists from Johannes Gutenberg University in Germany found that closing the window at night helps reduce stress, which in turn prevents the rise of “bad” cholesterol in the blood. The results of the researchers’ experiments, published In the journal Noise and Health.

A closed window reduces the noise level in the room where the person is sleeping. During sleep, the brain is much more sensitive to noises than when we are awake, causing them to cause stress at night. Stress also leads to the production of hormones, including cortisol, which can lead to high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure in the long run.

According to scientists, noise stress can be explained by a legacy of distant ancestors who perceive noise as a danger signal, especially at night. The authors recommend sleeping with closed windows even in summer, especially for city dwellers who live near busy highways.
