Scientists from the Silesian University in Katowice (Poland) found that the beard is perceived by men as a factor of dominance when interacting with other members of the sex. The results of the research were published in the journal Sexual Behavior Archives.
“We examined men’s beard preferences and found out whether their judgments about beard fit depend on social situations. In total, we interviewed more than 500 men, some with beards,” he said.
Men who grew beards apparently saw the presence of beard as a factor that increased their sexuality in the eyes of women. Conversely, beardless men found the absence of facial hair more attractive.
“Furthermore, participants in both groups want to be unique in order to increase their importance in the context of interspecies competition. Those who find his beard more sexy would like other men to have less beards. Those who prefer to be shaved want to see more bearded men. “We’re pretty sure that’s how men want to get rid of other people’s pasts,” she said.
When it comes to social situations, men find it more appropriate to grow a beard, especially for informal occasions with another man.
“We believe that in this way men determine positions in society. Having a beard is associated with dominance and aggression. The scientists noted, however, that the social context of this phenomenon has not been studied. Thus, the beard can instantly affect the position of a man in interaction with another man, ”the scientists concluded.
