In the Spektr-M space observatory project, simultaneous multi-frequency synthesis technology will be used, which makes it possible to obtain several times more information while observing the Universe. For the first time, multifrequency synthesis was tested as part of the Russian Radioastron mission (Spektr-R project), but as Rudnitsky clarified, the technology will be used in an updated form on Millimetron.

“The Millimetron observatory is planned to be able to operate in simultaneous multi-frequency synthesis mode with ground-based telescopes,” said the space center expert.

The method involves observing the same object through several receivers tuned to different radio frequencies. Now scientists are developing a system that would allow simultaneous use of all or several receivers on Millimetron. For this, experts from the Korea Institute of Astronomy and Space Sciences took part.

“They were among the first to be able to apply such a system to ground-based telescopes,” Rudnitsky emphasized.

The simultaneous multi-frequency synthesis method makes it possible to improve the quality of observations and the sensitivity of the telescope, and to obtain much more valuable information in a shorter time. In addition, the expert concluded that the new technology could correct distortions caused by the planet’s atmosphere in the operation of ground-based telescopes.
