Scientists from Jinan University School of Medicine discovered that poor eating habits during college years can lead to lifelong health problems such as obesity, respiratory disease and depression. The results of the research were published in the journal Preventive Medicine Reports.
Nearly 12,000 medical students from 31 universities in China participated in the study. Scientists have found that a typical student diet, consisting of foods high in sugar and calories, is associated with an increased risk of obesity. This can lead to stress and depression, which often exacerbate overeating.
Additionally, poor dietary habits have been associated with an increased risk of infectious diseases, including those that affect the respiratory tract, such as COVID-19.
“We need to think about the dining environment we create for students. “We need to make sure our canteens and vending machines have healthy food options so they can eat on the go and also choose healthy foods.”
