Some eating habits that most people acquire during childhood can actually lead to serious eating disorders. For example, many people have heard that it is better to drink healthy juice than harmful soda, but this drink is also dangerous to health. This is what Artem Veris, a dietitian and product manager of FITKIT, a producer of sugar-free protein desserts told socialbites.ca.
“Fruit juices are valuable for the presence of vitamins, minerals and fiber. And if the packaged juice has more than the first two ingredients, then things aren’t so good when it comes to fiber. They do not contain the pulp, which is the source. Before being sold, fruit juices are industrially processed and deprived of many beneficial properties. Sugar and preservatives are also added to the final product for better storage and taste. However, juices already contain a large amount of sugar, which makes the situation with sugar in the drink even more dire, ”warned the expert.
Another childhood expression that often turns into an unhealthy habit is “eat faster, stop spreading porridge on a plate.” In this case, food begins to be associated with negativity. Eating ceases to be a pleasure, it becomes a necessary action that causes tension and stress.
“If you eat urgently, there is an increased risk that the food will not be crushed well when chewed and large pieces will fall into the esophagus. Food does not mix properly with saliva and then acid in the stomach and takes longer to digest, causing discomfort. If a person eats slowly, chews thoroughly, he feels better when he is full and does not overeat,” explains Artem Veris.
According to him, more harm than anxiety and in the phrase “clean the room – I’ll give you a chocolate.” By taking food as a reward, a clear link is established between actions and food. It may work and motivate at first, but such a “finished – food” chain is fixed in the brain quite quickly. This leads to a violation of appetite, and the person eats even when he does not need it. Especially if the prize is sweet.
“Eat in reserve, otherwise you will be hungry later” – the same as eating even when there is no feeling of hunger, that is, overeating. In this case, a person takes in excess calories, which means he will gain extra pounds. And how long a person will stay full, It determines not only the quantity of food, but also its quality,” he said.
He noted that if you eat too many simple carbohydrates, you may feel hungry within the first hour, but if the meal includes protein, fat, carbohydrates and fiber, the feeling of fullness will last for a long time. If it is important for a person not to eat for a long time, slow proteins are suitable, for example, casein in the form of protein shakes or fat-rich meat.
“When choosing products, pay attention to composition and balanced HFCF,” Veris concluded.
