Only 7% of the 70 tons of domestic solid waste in Russia is recycled. Environmentalist Tatyana Chaika, owner of the Termoplast-S company, told socialbites.ca what needs to be done to reduce the area of dumps and whether it is possible.
“The fact that the goods and packaging are disposable is the first thing we need to pay attention to. It’s time for consumers and manufacturers to make a choice in favor of reusable-negotiable packaging or abandon it altogether. We carelessly use freshwater resources, pollute them with sewage and industrial waste, killing all living things in them, ”said the author.
Chaika says the world’s population has crossed the threshold of 8 billion, and the presence of so many people on the planet affects the entire ecosystem. Meanwhile, there is no way to get to the nearest exoplanet, you need to minimize your footprint on Earth: rejecting disposable waste, separate collection and recycling of waste.
For example, everyone can now reject plastic bags and disposable containers, recycle and reuse resources, pay attention to afforestation initiatives, conserve water reserves by turning off the water while brushing teeth, and live with conscious consumption principles.
“Now the focus is still on conscious consumption: you can see material in the media about the benefits of reusable packaging, the prudent use of natural resources, the segregated collection and recycling of waste. In addition, 90 percent of large enterprises are already engaged in recycling,” he said.
