Astronomers will conduct exercises to receive messages from aliens using the Mars probe Trace Gas Orbiter. Reported by the SETI Institute.

The Euro-Russian spacecraft ExoMars TGO entered Mars orbit in 2017. Its main task is to study the atmosphere of this planet, for which it has several spectrometers (one of them is Russian), high-resolution cameras and the Russian FREND neutron detector, which can detect water at a depth of several meters. surface.

On May 24, exercises will be held to receive signals from an extraterrestrial civilization on Earth. Enthusiasts and scientists will use TGO radio equipment to simulate the transmitter’s distance from Earth. Reception will be performed using three sets of antennas: the Allen Radio Telescope (ATA), the Green Bank Observatory GBT radio telescope, and the Medicin antenna set. The specific content of the encrypted message developed by volunteer Daniela de Paulis and her team is currently undisclosed and allows the public to contribute to deciphering and interpreting the content.

“This experiment provides an opportunity for the SETI community in all its diversity to learn how to work together to receive, process, analyze and understand the meaning of a potential extraterrestrial signal,” the institute said.

SETI is the collective name of a number of public organizations that have devoted their activities since the second half of the 20th century to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence using radio scanning of the sky.
