The panic created by the coronavirus was followed by another great fear: Our country’s economic model left the industry in the background. There were no mask factories meeting the needs of the people or companies that could produce medical supplies for patients. Once the first waves were over, an answer came: shipping became difficult, for which industries like Ford at Almussafes had to stop some of their production because they didn’t have enough semiconductors.
The solution is to reindustrialize Spain. The purpose sounds good: the industrial fabric is fundamental to GDP, and jobs in the industry often have interesting pay. But things are not that easy. The economic investments are large and sooner than it seems, we must face the energy transition, which means the vigorous transformation of the factories we know now. The Valencian Community is spearheading some related projects, such as the massive factory for electric car batteries in Sagunt, or Ford’s decision to continue in the autonomous zone away from combustion engines in its future phase.
Meanwhile, consolidated sectors such as ceramics from Castellón or footwear from Alicante have recently been subject to unforeseen events such as strong rise in energy costs, occasional shortage of raw materials or relocation to third countries.
Industrial policy is heavily featured in regional election programs, but the prescriptions they propose are very diverse and non-overlapping. PSPV feels that to see solid growth, it must first face the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energies, so it includes sections on green hydrogen, energy communities or the application of aid so companies can adapt to future needs. without having to lose production capacity.
On the opposite side is Vox, which also wants energy sovereignty for the Community, but which is based on extending the life of the Cofrentes nuclear power plant, which should stop operating by 2030.
The People’s Party also refers to popular support to support the change in the production model based on empowering technological firms.
Compliance with the latest technology
Other aspects of reindustrialization relate to the promotion of areas for factories. Compromís and Ciudadanos are talking about industrial estates to provide them with the latest technology available, as well as updating existing industrial land to attract as many companies as possible.
Compromís also refers to linking professional training with industries, especially SMEs that require more technical profiles. Unides Podem also highlights the need for job creation for its part and proposes an organization that plans to fund companies for public participation.
