Death after a heart attack is twice as common in women than in men. Reported by the European Society of Cardiology.

According to several previous studies, women with segmental elevation myocardial infarction have a worse prognosis than men with length of hospital stay. This was associated with additional factors: for example, greater average age and presence of additional diseases.

Mariana Martigno and her colleagues set out to find out if the outcomes of myocardial infarction were really only affected by gender. For this purpose, studies were conducted on the archive data of people who were hospitalized with this diagnosis and underwent percutaneous coronary intervention in 2010-2015. Indicators such as death within 30 days of surgery, death within five years, re-infarction, ischemic stroke, and a range of other serious heart diseases were considered to evaluate outcomes. 884 patients were included in the study. The median age was 62 years, the proportion of women was 27%. Women were older than men (average age 67 versus 60) and had higher blood pressure, more evidence of diabetes and a history of stroke. Men were more likely to smoke and have coronary heart disease. The authors made statistical corrections and took these diagnoses into account.

As a result, it turned out that after 30 days 11.8% of women and 4.6% of men died. Five years later, almost a third (32.1%) of women died compared to 16.9% of men. More than one-third (34.2%) of women experienced serious cardiovascular disease within five years, compared to 19.8% of men. There was no significant difference in the treatment prescribed.

The authors therefore conclude that the difference in results is most likely due really solely to the characteristics of the female body.
