An endocrinologist, a specialist in preventive and anti-aging medicine at the EMC European Medical Center, told Gazeta that getting too much vitamin D can lead to a number of health problems in the elderly, such as cardiovascular deterioration and bone fragility. Ru Kamil Tabeeva.
For children, more than 40,000 IU (international units) per day for several months is considered vitamin excess; for adults – more than 50,000 ME. According to Tabeeva, if the level of vitamin D in the blood exceeds 150 ng/ml, we are talking about hypervitaminosis.
“With an overdose of vitamin D, calcium levels rise. Excess accumulates in the walls of blood vessels and heart muscle. With an increase in the level of calcium in the blood, its amount in the urine also increases and peroxidation occurs. This can lead to a violation of the heart rhythm and cause other pathological conditions of the cardiovascular system, ”explained the expert.
Tabeeva said that with an overdose of vitamin D, the level of calcium in the body rises and is washed from the bones.
“This causes increased fragility. Leakage of calcium leads to osteoporosis (destruction of bone tissue),” said the endocrinologist.
