Burnout is a state of physical and mental exhaustion. To counter this, a comprehensive approach is needed. However, if a person is tired and has not been properly rested for a long time, he often thinks about dismissal. Valeria Ryzhik, a psychologist at the Gemotest Laboratory, told socialbites.ca what to do if the job is causing rejection and thoughts of leaving appear more and more often.
“When a person quits work, he immediately gets rid of the main annoying factor. However, it is better not to rush into this. The fact is that mechanisms for overcoming stress in this case have not been established. Basically, it’s like burying your head in the sand. As a result, a person changing jobs may find themselves in the same situation that forces them to quit again. Burnout happens over and over again if you don’t strike a balance between rest and work. To counteract this, you can start by setting the limits of working time and a good weekend rest, ”said the expert.
According to him, the first thing to do in order not to make hasty decisions and restore the body’s energy resources is to take a short vacation. For some, a week without calls and business meetings is enough to regain the will and strength to start work again.
“Sometimes even 5-7 days of vacation helps prevent burnout as it reduces stress levels and the risk of depression. But if the person is already exhausted, then one week will not be enough for recovery, it will take at least 20 days. In the first week, one can only relax a little, and only after that the body really begins to rest. Also, some do not perceive such short weekly holidays as full-fledged and continue to check the mail, answer letters and job calls. In this case, even a relaxing effect cannot be achieved, and the person risks returning to the service more exhausted than before, ”explained Valeria Ryzhik.
It is important to prepare for this, so that the rest are not in vain: make a list of what you want to do, and then delete from it everything that will not bring moral satisfaction. For example, cleaning, children’s sections or a visit to the tax office. Write pleasant moments in your diary and enjoy the little victories that come with completing them.
“If a week’s vacation doesn’t help and the urge to quit doesn’t go away, it’s important to plan your next steps carefully: deal with finances, decide what you want to do, and prepare a resume before announcing your job. In addition, it is important to think in advance what to do if the new job creates the same stress, ”said the psychologist.
